This is the hometown of Airspeed co-founder Geth Noble. He worked for 15 years to get a skatepark built in Florence. Airspeed was founded in order to build this skatepark. Originally we were going to incorporate a steel full-pipe, but we got over it and decided to build the Double Death Hole instead.
The objective was to build an easier version of the Hot Wheels Track at Reedsport, cuz people were saying that it was impossible to ride over the mouth of the full pipe. Since then a few heroic gnarlers have done the impossible at Reedsport, and some of the hecklers have ridden over the hole at Florence, so everyone is happy.
The City of Florence was built on sand dunes, so we built the skatepark on sand as well. It raised eyebrows at first, and blowing sand was a problem for a while, but now the landscaping is done and all the sand is covered by topsoil and vegetation. So now you can come skate and leave your goggles at home. Florence has no drains--all the storm water exits the skatepark onto permeable pavers and percolates into the ground.
